Got Questions?
N4 Course — Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need N5 certification before joining N4?
Yes, the N4 course assumes N5-level proficiency. You should have completed an N5 course (at iTokyo or elsewhere) and have a working knowledge of Hiragana, Katakana, and ~100 Kanji before joining N4. If you're unsure of your level, book a free counselling session for a level assessment.
Why is the N4 trainer a native Japanese speaker?
At N4 level, students have the foundational Japanese skills to benefit greatly from native language immersion. A native Japanese trainer provides authentic pronunciation, natural intonation, and real conversational patterns that are essential to developing genuine Japanese fluency — which becomes even more important at N3, N2, and N1.
Can N4 certification help me get a job or study in Japan?
N4 certification, combined with N5, shows strong beginner-to-elementary Japanese proficiency. It can help you qualify for part-time work in Japan and demonstrates language commitment to universities and employers. For professional roles in Japan (IT, manufacturing, caregiving), N3 or N2 is typically the minimum — so many N4 students continue to N3 immediately after.
What grammar topics are covered in N4 that weren't in N5?
N4 introduces significantly more complex grammar: conditional forms (〜たら、〜ば、〜と、〜なら), passive and causative verb constructions, potential verb forms, giving/receiving structures (あげる/もらう/くれる), introduction to keigo (formal/polite Japanese), and purpose/reason expressions. These patterns are the foundation for real-world Japanese communication.
How many mock tests are included in the N4 course?
The N4 course includes 3 full mock exams, each timed to simulate actual JLPT N4 exam conditions. These cover all three sections: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary + Grammar), Reading, and Listening. We also run section-specific practice throughout the course. The final 2 weeks are dedicated to mock exams, analysis of weak areas, and exam strategy coaching.
