IS N1 RIGHT FOR YOU?

N1 opens doors N2 cannot

JLPT N1 is the highest level and the gold standard for professional Japanese. Entry requirement: N2 proficiency.

💼

Elite Bilingual Careers

N1 qualifies you for senior interpreter, translator, and business development roles at Japanese multinationals. It's the minimum for C-suite bilingual positions.

🏫

Japan University Admissions

Many Japanese national universities and graduate programs require N1 for direct admission. It's also required for some Japanese government scholarship programs.

📺

Media, Publishing, Broadcasting

Working in Japanese journalism, publishing, or broadcasting requires N1. Subtitling, content localization, and cultural liaison roles often demand this level.

🏢

IT Architecture & Consulting

Japanese IT firms hiring Indian engineers for client-facing architecture or consulting roles increasingly require N1 to conduct client meetings entirely in Japanese.

⚖️

Japan Permanent Residency

N1 can count toward Japan's Points-Based Preference System for Highly Skilled Professionals — helping you qualify faster for permanent residency status.

🏆

Academic & Research Fluency

Reading Japanese academic papers, thesis writing in Japanese, and full participation in Japanese research environments — all require N1 as a practical floor.

FAQ

N1 — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pass mark for JLPT N1?

The JLPT N1 has three sections: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary & Grammar), Reading, and Listening. Total score is 180 points. You must score at least 100/180 overall AND meet the section-level passing threshold for each (typically ~19/60 per section). N1 is the hardest to pass out of all JLPT levels — many serious students take it 2–3 times before passing.

How is N1 different from N2?

N2 demonstrates business-level proficiency in Japanese. N1 demonstrates near-native fluency — the ability to comprehend dense formal texts, spontaneous natural speech, abstract academic material, and classical literary forms. The vocabulary gap is large (6,000–8,000 words for N2 vs 10,000+ for N1). Most N1 candidates describe the jump from N2 to N1 as harder than N3→N2.

Is N1 required for jobs in Japan?

N1 is required for the most demanding bilingual roles: senior interpreter, legal translator, C-suite executive assistant, NHK broadcaster, academic researcher. For standard IT/bilingual/manufacturing roles in Japan, N2 is usually sufficient. However, N1 significantly increases your job options and starting salary — many hiring managers in Japan view N1 as proof of exceptional commitment to the language.

How long does preparation for N1 realistically take?

From zero to N1 typically takes 4–5 years of study. If you already have N2, adding N1 typically requires 8–12 months of serious study (300–400+ additional hours). iTokyo's structured 8-month programme is designed to deliver this efficiently with native guidance. Discipline outside class hours is essential — iTokyo recommends 1–2 hours of self-study per day during the N1 course.

When are the JLPT N1 exam dates?

JLPT is held twice a year globally: July (first Sunday) and December (first Sunday). In India, it is conducted at designated centres in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru. For 2026: 5 July 2026 and 6 December 2026. Registration typically opens 3 months before the exam date. iTokyo aligns the 8-month N1 batch to finish 2–4 weeks before the exam window.

Can I take N1 online from outside Coimbatore?

Yes. Our online N1 programme is available to students from any Indian state. Classes are live (not pre-recorded) via Google Meet with native Japanese instructors. You also receive access to the iTokyo LMS for self-paced practice. For visa or placement goals, online N1 is just as recognized as offline — the JLPT certificate does not specify how you studied.
