How difficult is JLPT N2 compared to N3?
N2 is significantly harder than N3 — many Japanese language learners consider it the most difficult practical jump in the JLPT ladder. N2 requires 1,000+ Kanji (versus 650 for N3), approximately 6,000 vocabulary words, ability to read literary and technical texts, and listening comprehension at broadcast speed. The grammar patterns are more abstract and nuanced. We recommend a 2–3 month gap between completing N3 and starting N2 to consolidate your N3 foundation.
Is N2 required to work in Japan as an IT professional?
For most Japanese IT companies hiring non-native speakers, JLPT N2 is the de facto minimum requirement, particularly for roles involving client interaction, documentation, or team collaboration in Japanese. Some companies accept N3 for purely technical roles with limited Japanese communication needs, but N2 significantly widens your opportunities — especially for bilingual, project management, and senior technical positions.
What is the N2 exam format and passing criteria?
The JLPT N2 exam has a total score of 180 marks split across: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary + Grammar): 60 marks; Reading: 60 marks; Listening: 60 marks. The overall passing threshold is approximately 90/180 (50%), but you must also clear minimum section scores (typically 19/60 per section). Failing any one section fails the whole test, even if your total is above 90. Our mock exams are structured exactly this way so you understand the scoring boundaries.
Can I join N2 without having taken N3 at iTokyo?
Yes. If you have N3 JLPT certification from any institution (iTokyo or elsewhere), you can join our N2 course. We recommend a level check first — contact us for a free assessment. N2 assumes solid N3 proficiency including keigo basics, 650+ Kanji reading, and the ability to follow conversational-speed Japanese listening. Students with self-studied Japanese at N3 level are also welcome after a level assessment.
