One of the first questions every new Japanese language student asks is: should I start with JLPT N5 or attempt N4 directly? The answer depends on your current level, your timeline, and your goal.
What Is the Difference Between N5 and N4?
JLPT N5 is the entry level — it tests basic Hiragana, Katakana, around 800 vocabulary words, 80 Kanji characters, and fundamental grammar. N4 is the next step — approximately 1,500 vocabulary words, 300 Kanji, and more complex sentence patterns. The reading passages are longer, and the listening section is faster and less predictable. Most Japanese language school admission requirements accept N4 or above as minimum.
Who Should Start at N5?
Start at N5 if you are a complete beginner — you have never studied Japanese formally, or you know only a few words. N5 gives you the correct foundation: Hiragana and Katakana mastery, basic grammar patterns, and essential vocabulary. Skipping N5 and attempting N4 as a beginner often leads to gaps that hurt you later at N3 and N2 levels.
Who Can Attempt N4 Directly?
You may be ready to start at N4 level if you already: completed a basic Japanese course (N5 equivalent), can read Hiragana and Katakana fluently, know at least 500–600 vocabulary words, and understand basic grammar patterns. iTokyo Academy can conduct a placement test to assess your level before enrolment.
Time Required for Each
- N5: 3 months, 120 hours of classroom instruction
- N4: 4 months, 160 hours — requires N5 foundation
- N5 + N4 combined: 7 months total — the most common path for students planning to study in Japan
iTokyo Batch Options for Both Levels

Our Recommendation
If you are a complete beginner, start with N5. If you already have some Japanese foundation, take the placement test. The goal is not to rush — it is to build a solid base. Speak to our counselors at +91 91500 08591 for a personalised recommendation.
